1-Prehistoric period-No written records are available for this historical age. Only archeological evidences are available to reconstruct the history of this period.

This has been divided into

   Mesolithic  or Middle Stone Age 10000 - 6000 BC

   During Mesolithic age the hunting of big animals   shifted to hunting of small animals and due to   settlement on a place for longer time horticulture,   domestication of animals and cultivation started.
  Burials of dead along with microliths have also     been   found.The sites are found in Langhanj in   Gujrat ,adamgarh in Madya Pradesh and in some   places of Rajesthan ,Uttar Pradesh and Bihar .

Neolithic age 6000 - 4000 BC

This age is characterized by the practice of cultivation ,use of pottery, polishing of stone tools ,formation of mud brick houses ,use of cattle for transport and cultivation and use of clothes made up of cotton and wool .

Important sites include : Kashmir valley , Chirand in Bihar , Belan Valley in Uttar Pradesh , Maski ,Brahmagiri ,hallur ,Kodekal in Karnataka ,Paiyampalli in Tamilnadu and Utnur in Andhra Pradesh.
